NY Times science reporter Dr. Andrew Revkin writes about "the 17th Street Canal, the source of most of the water swamping New Orleans" that "officials and [Army Corps] engineers said that after they had found the widening gap in the concrete wall on the eastern side of the canal, they had no quick-response plan to repair it."
Lt. Gen. Carl A. Strock, commander of the corps, said "plugging the gap was a lower priority." The corps is directed by FEMA. "It is FEMA who is really calling the shots and setting priorities here," he said.
Dr. Shea Penland of the Pontchartrain Institute was surprised because the break was "along a section that was just upgraded. It did not have an earthen levee, it had a vertical concrete wall several feet thick."
"After failing to close a 300-foot break in the canal through which most of the floodwater entered the city, federal engineers decided last night [August 31st] to take the battle with Lake Pontchartrain to the lakefront."
Alfred C. Naomi, a senior project manager for the corps, said "there were still no clear hints why the main breach in the flood barriers occurred along the 17th Street Canal, normally a conduit for vast streams of water pumped out of the perpetually waterlogged city each day and which did not take the main force of the waves roiling the lake. He said that a low spot marked on survey charts of the levees near the spot that ruptured was unrelated and that the depression was where a new bridge crossed the narrow canal near the lakefront."
This would refute the speculation that a dip in the retaining levee or walls might have allowed water to slop over and start the collapse.
We have an unexplained crack in several feet of concrete. FEMA decided not to plug it and let the water flow until a US city was flooded. Thousands drowned.

i think the government is into this but how and why is yet to be determined. certainly they are shedding no tears over the death of tens of thousands of democratic voters or poor folk who might take some funds away from the war "effort" but when bloggers start in with the zionist stuff it defeats the validity of an argument and only shows one's prejudice. zionists are doing plenty with our government now but let's see how this plays out before naming any one religious group.

Something doesn't add up. This was concrete? I was made to believe this was all so probable according to the order of events because a barge could easily topple an already strained to capacity earthen mound dam. But this was a modern concrete barrier. That would have had to hit the wall at some kinda velocity, DURING a hurricane. But to justcrash into it after? Unpowered? How big was this wall and how big was this barge??

THE DROWNING STREET MEMO
It should be obvious that the levee breaking in three relatively distantly seperated places at roughly the same time provides the amatuer sleuth with ample circumstantial evidence that it was a case of sabotage.
One breach could be better concealed by saboteurs to appear more random, but three were apparently required to prevent quick recovery and to increase the speed of flooding.
Three breaches as a matter of fact greatly increases the favourable odds that we are looking at sabotage. Three breaches happening as seperate events but in the same relative window of time increases odds even further.
I would bet that the breaches at the saboteur's advantageous hour of 4:00 A.M. were shortly preceded by reports of "looting" and or "gunfire" in the areas within their vicinity.
Obviously, no witness from the immediate area could be allowed to survive to report explosions on the levee. Black Ops teams likely had to eliminate witnesses before the flooding would prevent them from doing so.
I would not be surprised if all potential witnesses around the levee area were later found "drowned" with bullet holes in them as we are hearing reported throughout the region.
The neighborhood area around the levee breaches is America's new Grassy Knoll.
He who discovers the secret of the layout and the timeline will surely expose the DROWNING STREET MEMO.

OK, one breach could be considered unfortunate, two would be carelessness and three would be abject negligence.
I have read some very strange reports about their being witnesses to them being "blown" and that those "witnesses" have now disappeared, which further feeds the conspiracy theories and distracts the search for the actuality of what took place

Seriously, now. How many of us have ever been in a hurricane? I'm guessing not many of us. Even if you have been, have you ever been in 8 feet of rushing water? The hurricane itself was not what killed these people - it was the water. Comparing Katrina to Betsy is just plain stupid.
And are you engineers? Did you actually visit the levee before it broke? What do you actually know about the cement??
I am no Bush fan myself, but do you people honestly think that he and many high government officials would commit career suicide so they could "kill off" thousands of low-income people? As someone else already mentioned - remember that there were warnings of a hurricane DAYS before it hit the area. True, some people did not have the resources to leave the area. But they were offered shelter in more secure areas. Still, so many of them just didn't listen and stayed in their own homes. Am I saying they caused their own deaths? Absolutely not. But some could have been avoided. Those that did seek shelter were horribly treated by the government. Please don't forget, though, the thousands of volunteers who tried to make the best out of an unimaginably disastrous situation.
Get your heads out of your asses and spend your time and efforts trying to help someone in need. You have plenty of time later to blame Elvis, the Loch Ness Monster and Ghandi for the evils of the world. Unless, of course, you think there's a conspiracy against you, too...

Hurricanes occur every year in the Southern US. Has there ever been such a mess as New Orleans? Certainly there has been serious damage and some loss of life, but this is quite different. The force of the hurricane when it hit New Orleans was not as great as anticipated and it was not during the storm that the levees were breached. The levees were breached in three different locations in the wee hours of the morning the day after the storm. It is puzzling to a veteran of the Army Corps of Engineers - who has worked in NO for thirty years - puzzling because the largest breach was not on the lake, but on a canal used for pumping out water.
People who can think aat all are driven to skepticism by the opportunistic and very lame justifications that come from the government when experts like Mr. Naomi express doubts. Grain barges - three different locations - all at 4:00 in the morning, hours after the storm. Reported shooting. Possible witnesses drowned. Get busy and help the needy, there will be plenty of time to think about what happened once the government gets their story straight.

One would think that our ever vigilant Department of Homeland Security would be especially interested to know whether the levees had any help breaking. After all, what is to stop those who 'want to hurt America' from being ready to take advantage of a fully-expected, natural occurrence the consequences of which have been predicted for decades? Nor is there a need to receive a 'claim of responsibility' from a 'terrorist cell' to direct our attention to this possibility, as our government's response to other 'terrorist' attacks show. One might also add that the destruction of a strategic city through possible negligence equally merits a forensic investigation. This certainly would include investigation into whether failure to make needed fortifications led to breaking.
But all this is so tiresome, isn't it? The United States of America apparently doesn't need forensics.

I always look at strange events in light of all the other evidence.

On Saturday, September 3rd, at 5pm, on FOX News, I saw a man being interviewed who lived on 17th street near the levee break. He said that after the hurricane had passed, he saw two empty grain barges run into the levee, break holes in it, and then leave. They only played this footage once. But, according to FOX News, the levees were broken on purpose and by the actions of people. If you have a problem with this eye witness account, contact FOX News and ask them about it.

We were in new Orleans a week prior to the hurrican staying at the Homewood Suites on Poydras street in the CBC. The evening of August 24 we observed a group of about 6 VERY fit men ages about 30 to 40 (obviously military) socializing in the lounge. Our first thoughts were that they must be recruiters for the military as we heard and witnessed some of them cajoling the young hotel workers into considering joining the military, particularly the navy. These were not recruiters. The following morning August 25 they checked out of the hotel. They were dressed in military uniformes.

This was highlighted in a Wall Street Journal article published last week, which showed an investment group (led by Judah Hertz -- sp?) linked with Larry Silverstein (yes the same one of 911 fame -- the Wall Street Journal even brazenly called the link eerie)had been buying up much of the commercial real estate in New Orleans over the past 2 years and now controlled a large portion of all commercial real estate in the city, including buildings next to the Super Tomb. The Journal article went on to note that the commercial properties were all insured to the hilt and any damage to them would be fully recoverable.
